Update on ASOS and Cuts

Find the latest information on Action Short of Strike and Cuts at UHI here.

We had over thirty students attend our previous All-Student meeting on Thursday 7th March, at which our main topic for discussion was Action Short of Strike (ASOS) and potential cuts to the UHI curriculum. Although these were difficult conversations, we were delighted to see so many of you at the meeting and found it very useful to hear students’ perspectives from all across the UHI partnership.

This week we are emailing each student who attended that meeting, with an update on latest developments, plus some suggestions of actions students could take. We thought it would be useful if we shared that information here too – so the wider student community can be involved in the campaign too!

Firstly, here are some relevant update and information:

  1. The draft minutes of this meeting can be found here.
  2. UHI’s latest information for students on industrial action and related mitigations, with some answers to likely questions, was updated on Wednesday, 20th March. You can find it on UHI’s website but you will be contacted by your Academic Partner should your studies be affected by this action.
  3. You can find our own statement on ASOS and potential cuts, approved by our Executive Committee on Friday 22nd March here.
  4. We have some good news! The BA Fine Art degree at UHI Moray will now run as planned in the next academic year. Our statement specifically on the situation at UHI Moray can be found here.

Secondly, some things you might like to consider doing:

  1. Continue to keep in touch with us directly, through your Student Voice Rep, or via your local Students’ Association office at your nearest campus, with your thoughts, ideas and experiences from where you are.
  2. Write to your MSP(s) expressing your concerns about the learning experience at UHI. You can search by postcode for your constituency and regional MSPs on the Scottish Parliament website, and we have a template email that you can adapt here.
  3. Seek support from our Advice Service and from UHI’s own student support including the Red Button.
  4. Come to our next All-Student Meeting, from 1.00pm to 2.30pm on Wednesday 24th April, at which we will update with any latest developments we know of. The main theme of that meeting will be building community in 2024-25, and you’re welcome to bring your views on that topic too.
